Metaplanet Turns an Esports Veteran Into a Bitcoin Treasury Giant

Key Takeaways Super League shareholders approved Metaplanet’s proposed 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million investment.

Metaplanet will receive nearly 44.86 million common shares and warrants covering up to 381 million more.

Super League plans to become Superplanet Inc., trading as SUPA, after the transaction closes.

Super League Approves Metaplanet’s 2,100 Bitcoin Investment

Super League Enterprise (Nasdaq: SLE) announced Monday that shareholders approved every proposal connected to Metaplanet’s investment at its Oct. 16 annual meeting. The agreement, originally announced Aug. 18, would deliver 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million in cash through Metaplanet’s U.S. subsidiary.

The bitcoin (BTC) was worth approximately $132.1 million when the agreement’s reference price was established Aug. 14. By Oct. 16, its value had climbed to approximately $170 million, a $37.9 million difference before the transaction even closed.

Once finalized, Super League will become Superplanet Inc., trade on Nasdaq under SUPA, and operate as Metaplanet’s U.S. bitcoin treasury platform. The companies expect to close during the fourth quarter, pending customary conditions and required Nasdaq filings.

Metaplanet Secures Control With Shares, Warrants and a Five-Year Lockup

The digital asset treasury (DAT) firm Metaplanet will receive 44,859,400 common shares priced at $3 apiece, alongside convertible preferred stock and 10-year warrants covering as many as 381 million additional shares. Those warrants carry exercise prices ranging from $3 to $33.50.

The arrangement also grants Metaplanet rights to invest another $210 million through preferred securities over 24 months. Its common shares and certain future shares face a five-year lockup, subject to exceptions. Super League Chairman, CEO and President Matt Edelman welcomed the shareholder decision.

“I’m deeply grateful to our stockholders for their support. Their approval brings us one step closer to redefining what this company can become,” Edelman remarked. “If the transaction closes, we would no longer be defined solely by our current scale.”

The Super League executive added:

“Alongside an operating business that continues to serve many of the world’s most recognizable brands, we would have a treasury seeded with 2,100 Bitcoin and the long-term backing of one of the largest corporate bitcoin holders globally.”

From Esports and Budget Hotels to a Bitcoin Treasury Alliance

Super League began in 2014 as Nth Games, eventually organizing amateur esports competitions before moving into gaming advertising, Roblox experiences, and branded entertainment. Its 2019 Nasdaq debut gave way to strategic reinventions, including a 2023 rebranding. Shares of SLE jumped on the news and closed 6.9% higher at Wall Street’s close.

Metaplanet’s origins are equally improbable. The Japanese company evolved from budget hospitality operations battered by COVID-19 into a bitcoin accumulation business under CEO Simon Gerovich. After adopting bitcoin as its primary treasury asset in April 2024, Metaplanet accumulated 44,000 BTC by Sept. 30, 2026. It ranks as the world’s second-largest publicly traded corporate holder of bitcoin.

Now an American gaming advertiser and a former Japanese hotel operator are preparing to share a corporate bitcoin strategy across Nasdaq and Tokyo. Super League’s advertising operation will remain intact, but its financial identity is about to become something entirely different.
