An electric drifting machine, the new Renault 5 Turbo 3E is a beast
ReadDo you want your 50th birthday to be a big deal? There might not be a better way to have fun than to get very sideways and do some amazing drifts, and the new Renault 5 Turbo 3E show car is the perfect vehicle for the job. It’s a wild 280kW reimagining of the upcoming Renault 5 electric hatchback, which will replace the current Renault Zoe when it comes out in 2024. It was made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original 5 and to pay tribute to the R5 Turbo and Turbo 2 performance versions. The R5 Turbo 3E is a two-seat rear-drive one-off car made for drifting. The “E” stands for “electric,” in case you were wondering. The back seats had to be taken out to make room for the powertrain, which has two motors, one for each of the back wheels. The 42kWh battery is in the middle of the car’s floor and is designed to last “for several laps or a raging gymkhana.” Renault didn’t say how much raging you can do in a gymkhana, but given that the powertrain has 280kW and 516lb ft of torque, we think it will be enough to really wear out some tires. It can go as fast as 124 mph and has a steering angle of 50 degrees or more, which helps with all that drifting. The R5 Turbo 3E also has a tubular frame and a racing-style roll cage.Ken Block has made a career out of drifting videos, so the Renault has 10 built-in places to mount cameras both inside and outside. Some cars have slots in the headlights and side mirrors. The design of the machine’s outside is based on both the original R5 Turbo rally cars and the videogame. It has a carbon fiber body and rear air intakes like the Turbo 2, which were inspired by the Turbo 2. Large air intakes on the front bumper cool the battery and motor and give the car more downforce. You may have also seen the huge rear wing.Inside, there are carbon-fiber racing seats with safety harnesses and a handbrake level that makes it easier to drift. The ten analog dials on the original Turbo 2 have been replaced with digital screens, and the graphics look like they came from a video game. For example, to start the car, you have to choose “Free Play.”This year, the R5 Turbo 3E will be shown to the public for the first time at the Chantilly Arts and Elegance event. In October, it will be at the Paris Motor Show with the new Renault 4 EV.Latest NFT News, Trendings and Tutorials, right at your inbox, every Monday Leave this field empty if you're human:
